If you're planning to rent a car for a vacation or business trip, and you don't currently own your own vehicle, you may be concerned that you will run into difficulty during the rental process based on the fact that you don't have your own vehicle operator’s insurance. The majority of individuals who drive their own vehicles have vehicle insurance (in most states, liability insurance is a legal requirement). However, for people who live in metropolitan areas, and typically use public transportation, personal vehicle insurance is not necessary. After all, who would purchase insurance for a car they don’t own? The good news is that you don't necessarily need personal vehicle insurance in order to rent a car.
In most cases, the rental company you have chosen to do business with will make a photocopy of your valid driver’s license and will provide you with a list of varying options. In most cases, your rental company will offer you a wide variety of options that are a bit extraneous and do not seek to meet your current needs. However, these specials and extras are often quite helpful. For this reason, it’s a good idea to make certain that you're paying attention to all the information provided by your rental representative so that you don't end up with a bill that requires you to pay for feature don't require, or worse yet, that you miss out on features you do require. Once you have informed your rental company that you are uninsured as a driver, they will provide you with an insurance plan designed specifically for renting a vehicle. In order to rent your vehicle, you will be required to purchase the company's insurance plan. This factor will also apply if your regular auto insurance does not cover the use of rental cars…
…which brings us to our next point. Not all car insurance companies will offer coverage for rental cars. Depending upon the kind of auto insurance you have, you may be required to purchase the rental company's insurance plan anyway.
Believe it or not, it is relatively simple to rent a car without auto insurance. You'll find that renting a vehicle is an easy, stress free, and fun process as long as you provide your rental company with adequate information and ask enough questions. It's also a good idea, and smart shopping, to pay attention and only request the items that you must have in order for your rental to be successful.
